My wife, Alyce and I decided to move to Santa Fe in 1978 and build a solar adobe home. This was a crazy venture for someone with no building experience, but we did many things right, and one was to hire Bill Lumpkins, the well-known architect and his staff to draw up the plans and coach us through this challenging process.
One day while meeting with Bill, I met Steve Northup, who was also building a Lumpkins solar adobe. This meeting began an enduring friendship with Steve, and it was during these years that I learned about Steve’s interest in photography, which continues today. Recently Steve and I met at the Saigon Café to talk about his photographic career with various assignments around the world.
When he was a youngster, Steve received a Kodak box camera and started taking pictures. He was not only interested in taking pictures — he also was fascinated with the chemical process that is usually overlooked by casual camera buffs. Northup’s work was professional enough that while in junior high school he did photo assignments for the Santa Fe New Mexican.
