Nothing like graduating with your son.

Or in this case, your stepson.

Such is the case with Paola Martinez, 32, and her stepson, Jeremy Sanchez, 18.

Martinez and Sanchez earned their GEDs from Santa Fe Community College last month and are well on their way to higher aspirations.

“I always had that urge in my heart to finish,” Martinez said from their Santa Fe home. She dropped out of high school at age 16 in her native Mexico.

Martinez later married and inherited Jeremy as her stepson.

Because Spanish is her first language, the GED courses and tests were not easy. She tried them in English, but that didn’t work out. So, she took the GED courses in Spanish at SFCC, and earned her diploma.

Still, that wasn’t easy.
